Traveling to Mexico from the United States is a popular choice for many Americans, whether for tourism, business, or visiting family and friends. Mexico's diverse culture, scenic landscapes, cities and accessibility make it an attractive destination. However, like any international travel, there are specific requirements and guidelines U.S. citizens must follow to ensure a smooth entry into Mexico.

Passport Requirements: One of the primary requirements for U.S. citizens entering Mexico is a valid passport. Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay in Mexico. While Mexico does not require a passport to be valid for six months beyond your travel dates (a common requirement for other countries), it is generally good practice to ensure your passport has several months of validity remaining to avoid any unforeseen issues.

Passport Card vs. Passport Book: U.S. citizens can use either a passport book or a passport card for entry into Mexico. However, it's important to note the differences:

  • Passport Book: Required for air travel into Mexico. This document allows entry via any mode of transportation, including air, land, and sea.

  • Passport Card: Valid for entry into Mexico by land and sea only, not by air. This is a convenient and less expensive option for those living near the border or taking short trips.

Tourist Card (FMM): In addition to a valid passport, U.S. citizens traveling to Mexico for tourism purposes will need a Mexican Tourist Card, also known as the Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM). This document serves as a tourist permit and is required for stays of up to 180 days.

How to Obtain the FMM

  1. On Arrival: The FMM can be obtained at a Mexican port of entry, including airports and border crossings. Travelers will need to fill out a form and present their passport.

  2. Online: Travelers can also apply for the FMM online before their trip through the website of the Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM). After completing the online application, you will receive a confirmation email with your FMM form, which you should print and carry with you.

There is typically a fee for the FMM, which is included in the cost of airfare for those flying into Mexico. If entering by land, the fee can be paid at the border.

Customs Declarations and Permits

Personal Belongings: U.S. citizens can bring personal belongings into Mexico without paying duty, provided these items are within the allowed limits. This includes clothing, personal care items, and other necessities for personal use. Travelers should declare any items that exceed these limits or any items intended for resale.

Vehicles: If you plan to drive your vehicle into Mexico, you will need a Temporary Vehicle Importation Permit (TIP). This permit is required for vehicles traveling beyond the border zone (usually 12-20 miles from the border) and is valid for up to six months.

How to Obtain a TIP

  1. Online: You can apply for the TIP online through the website of the Banjército (the Mexican Army Bank) before your trip.

  2. On Arrival: The TIP can also be obtained at Banjército offices located at border crossings. You will need to provide your passport, vehicle registration, proof of ownership, and a credit card.

There is a fee for the TIP, and a refundable deposit is required, which is returned when you cancel the permit and leave Mexico with your vehicle.

COVID-19 Requirements

As of 2024, there are no specific COVID-19 entry requirements for U.S. citizens traveling to Mexico, such as vaccination certificates or negative test results. However, it is advisable to check for any updates or changes in regulations before your trip, as health and safety measures can evolve.
