In 1924, in Mexico, April 30th was established as Children's Day during the presidency of General Álvaro Obregón and the term of Minister of Public Education, José Vasconcelos. This measure aimed to reaffirm children's rights and ensure a happy childhood for their integral development as individuals. Internationally, the UN General Assembly in 1959 established International Children's Day on November 20th, coinciding with the approval of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The purpose of Universal Children's Day is to remind that children are the most vulnerable group affected by global crises and challenges. It seeks to raise awareness about their rights and the importance of continuously working for their well-being and development. José Vasconcelos, during his tenure as Secretary of Public Education, called for promoting fraternity and understanding towards children, transforming schools into welcoming places where everyone could experience enriching moments, regardless of their economic situation.
It is important to note that the human rights of children and adolescents are recognized in the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States, international treaties, and other relevant laws, such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the General Law on the Rights of Girls, Boys, and Adolescents (promulgated on December 4, 2014). The celebration of Children's Day aims to dedicate a moment to understand the situation of the child population, promote their social inclusion, and carry out activities that foster their well-being and access to their fundamental rights as human beings.
