The Copper Canyon, located in the mountain range of the Sierra Madre Occidental, stands as a relatively undiscovered gem of Mexico. This canyon system surpasses the Grand Canyon in size and, in some places, depth. Despite much of the landscape being inaccessible, in the mid-1960s, after nearly 60 years of intermittent construction, railway tracks were successfully laid through the canyons. Presently, the train known as El Chepe has become an essential mode of transportation for locals and the optimal choice for tourists to explore some of the most breathtaking views in Mexico.
The train journey, lasting between 9 and 16 hours, crosses 37 bridges and 86 tunnels. Along its route, it makes stops in at least 5 towns that are worth visiting, providing opportunities for adventures, hikes, learning about new cultures, and appreciating magnificent landscapes.
The Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacífico, better known as El Chepe, shines not only as one of the few commuter trains in Mexico but also as the best way for tourists to explore the remote and stunning Copper Canyon. The 653 km of track connect Chihuahua, Chihuahua, and Los Mochis, Sinaloa. While it is possible to complete the journey in a single day, extending the experience over several days or even weeks is well worth it. Stopping and spending nights in the towns along the route is what makes a visit to the Copper Canyon so special.
There are two options for exploring the Copper Canyon by train. The older train is now called Chepe Regional, and the new luxury train is known as Chepe Express.
The ideal time to visit the Copper Canyon by train is from September to October, just as the rainy season is coming to an end and the weather is still quite warm. While you can also travel the entire route by bus, it wouldn't be as comfortable, and you would miss out on the stunning panoramas that El Chepe offers.
